Hi Anne-Marie,
So sorry to hear you are suffering so much. I can't give any advice because I don't know much about TMJ, but I hope it clears up for you soon.

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time right now. It sounds very painful. I wish I could help you but unfortunately don't know anything about it. I am sure someone on the forum will be able to give you some advice. Hope you are feeling better soon

hi
sorry its bad again. I get dreadful pain in the TMJ on the left side mainly but it tends to be mercifully short lived for a couple of days. I eat a lot of soup on those days!
I have this Phorpain gel I rub on the outside of the cheek as many times as needed.
i got it on prescription.
you can get a steroid jab into that joint if its really bad.

Thanks Jenni, I will try the gel, i have been using an ibuprofen gel it helps a little, the amatriptlins good also, but i dont want to become to reliant on it.
Its work that worries me the earliest app i can get wit the GP is Friday, will he still give me a sick cert if i am well by then, i was hoping to be back b4 then.
How are you doing,? i am sorry i have not been keeping up, all my problems seem small in comparison to others, never the less this RA takes over at times to us all.
Take care.

I get TMJ and it`s horrible - lots of slushy food and being afraid to open your mouth. I rely on strong painkillers and it usually lasts three or four days when it comes to visit me. I take amitriptyline too. Kathleen C x

Thanks for advice.
Rose, TMJ stands for Temporomandibular joint, it effects the jaw, face ,neck. I thought at first that it was wisdom teeth coming through, as the pain was down one side of my face, it was so painful just to open and close my jaw, then i was suffering terrible headaches and face pain, my dentist did x-rays and then decided to send me to Maxillofacial where i was told it was TMJ, i had not heard of this before.
i was told that this condition is secondary to R.A.
Take care all.

Ann-M- I cant tollerate the amytryptalin- it gives me nightmares.... I found the nortryptalin better but there are several in the "family" to try. In the end I have found gabapentin best of all for all that nerve related pain.
Tricky at first as it made me giddy the first few doses but then it completely went and the relief! WOW! its great stuff!

Hi Anne, I have had this for many year, my dentist/ orthodontist made me a jaw splint to wear at night, it sits over my bottom teeth and has made a big difference. Hope you get some relief soon. Roisin

Hi Anne
I had similar for a long time several years ago. I too had a dental shield fitted and it worked quite well although it hurt but I decided to go to a chiropractor, who sent me for xrays in Bolton and it turned out that my head was not on my shoulders properly (gruesome.) After several months of manipulation by the chiropractor the pain went away. I didn't have RA at that time and will probably be something totally different to yours but thought you might be interested. Good luck.

Lol Sheila, yep it sounds strange, but i am sure it was very painful, i am glad things are ok now, i have a splint which i wear at night its strange to wear and i often wake at odd times and have to remove it.
Still having pain it just comes on for no apparent reason its getting me down, i have GP app Friday dont really think he will help. i think i will just have to wait it out.
Take care. Anne-m xxx
